New Course Offerings at Legacy Christian Academy for ’08-09 School Year

Advanced Web and Graphic Design: (one semester) (requires successful completion of both Graphic Design and Presentation and Web Design) The course builds on the student’s foundation of graphic design an analysis as well as web planning and design. Students will explore and learn many of advanced Photoshop skills used by design professionals. Topics include JavaScript, Dynamic HTML, use of ImageReady, animation, creating high-end impages for the web, creating special web effects, flash, fireworks, advanced cascading style sheets, retouching and enhancing images, and advanced techniques for manipulating images.

Environmental Science: (full year) (requires IPC and faculty approval) This course is an inquiry based course that guides students in seeking understanding of the varied aspects of the physical world in which they live. Topics explored include ecology, populations, understanding and managing resources and the relationship of man to the environment. Biblical stewardship will be emphasized throughout the course. Students will conduct both field and laboratory investigations.

Weightlifting/Conditioning: (one semester course) (requires faculty approval and varsity sport participation) Improving strength, speed, flexibility, and athletic awareness will be the primary goals of this class. Sport specific conditioning will be emphasized. There will be separate courses offered for boys and girls.

AP United States History: (full year course) (requires faculty approval) This course is a college level course providing a comprehensive coverage of the history of the US from pre-colonial times through the twenty-first century. We will incorporate a positive, patriotic approach to American history, placing a special emphasis on our Christian heritage.

AP Government: (semester course) (requires faculty approval) This course prepares students to take the AP Government and Politics Exam. It provides an analytical perspective on government and politics in the United States. This course involves both the study of general concepts used to interpret US politics and the analysis of specific case studies. Familiarity with the various institutions, groups, beliefs, and ideas that constitute US political reality is required. Emphasis is placed on the faith of our founding fathers in building our democracy and our responsibility as Christians in becoming involved in the political process.

Latin I: (full year course) Students will learn to read and translate basic Latin constructions, study elements of Roman civilization, explore etymological dictionaries, and increase their knowledge of Latin phrases and abbreviations commonly used in the modern world.

Latin 7/8: The course lays the foundation for a lifelong appreciation of and affection for other times, cultures and languages. Students learn the basics of Latin grammar and vocabulary while also studying the wonders of the ancient world. Study of Roman mythology, ancient Roman life, and Latin roots forms the basis of this introductory class.

Debate: (full year course) (faculty approval required) Students will be engaged in constructing arguments and strategies for a TAPPS competition. Students will spend time debating each other, either with a pending resolution or with resolutions composed or selected for the class. Higher level thinking is encouraged and sound construction of viewpoints is emphasized. Through participation in this class, students will develop and hone their critical thinking and public speaking skills.

Theatre Pro: (full year course) (Intro to Theater Arts and faculty approval required) This is an acting course that develops the use of a range of emotional expressions to portray complex characters, studies the impact of language to reveal and communicate text and subtext, fosters objectivity in appraising personal creative endeavors, and explores the execution of stage business appropriate to character and given circumstances. Students in this class will take part in TAPPS drama competition.

New Evidence that Demands a Verdict – by Josh McDowell: Christian Studies course. McDowell was an attorney who set out to disprove Christianity and became a believer in the process. Explains the historical and philosophical defenses for the claims of Christ.
